our history

Founded in 1986 by artist Susan Gamble, Santa Theresa Tile Works makes brilliant, distinctive tile and mosaics that epitomize Tucson decorative style. Once you start noticing Santa Theresa tile, you’ll begin to spot it all over town – and across the nation.

All Santa Theresa tile is handmade by artists in our workshop at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Sixth Street, which, along with our beautiful showroom, is open to the public. There, in the heart of the Historic Warehouse Arts District, you’ll find a huge array of tiles, friendly staff happy to help you with projects large or small, a full schedule of hands-on workshops, and unique Southwestern-themed gifts.

Since 2016, when Susan gave the business to the school, all proceeds from Santa Theresa go to benefit Imago Dei Middle School, a free private school for children from low-income families.

 Testimonials

General Public

The public school district students are remarkable in the way that they build themselves and create their own journey. It is an incredible achievement for one to come so far on their own, but that can’t be said for many. At Imago Dei Middle School, no student has to go about their journey alone. The program offers fifth to eight grade children a tuition free private school education exclusively offered to low income families. By doing so, every student is met with as many opportunities as anyone else. Every student is provided with a year of free meals and a weekly food pantry sponsored by Trader Joes for their families. The school includes an extensive curriculum filled with activities to nourish children’s minds as well as aid in nurturing all talents; whether it be art, music, sports or more. This support is extended to their spiritual lives, the faith-based curriculum welcomes and respects all faiths and traditions. Above all, Imago Dei does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender or ethnic origin. Imago Dei does not stop supporting their students once they graduate, their Graduate Support Program for all grades and alumni provides their students with workshops, fun activities and one-on-one time with professionals. Imago Dei’s vision of breaking cycles of poverty through quality education serves families just as much as the child and that is more than any other schools can provide.

Personal Testimonial

Having been in the country a year, I struggled to stay focused in a class whose language I was just learning. Shortly after my first year in Public School, I transferred over to Imago Dei’s fifth grade class. I was devastated to leave all my friends behind and switch to a ten hour school day, have to attend Saturday school, and have my summer cut short by a month of summer school. Looking back at my younger self, all I can think is how naive I was. I was not seeing that those extra hours during the day gave me a chance to ask my teachers for help on my homework. The extra half day of school in which we sold plants at the farmers market gave me an opportunity to learn about business and marketing. The one month of summer school put me up to speed on English, got me better at math and helped me enter a great high school. Once in high school, I was provided with workshops, scholarship opportunities and one-on-one help from tutors to which now, all I can be is truly grateful. It has been four and a half years since I graduated Imago, now, much to their help and my personal goals, I will be attending Grand Canyon University this fall. I may be on a journey to find my future, but I know with certainty I will not be alone. I am lucky to say I have an immense support system which has come to be my family, that I am part of another family: the Imago Dei Family.
