Susan Gamble – Owner and Principal Tile Artist
In 1986, after receiving her Masters in Fine Arts (MFA) from California State University at Long Beach, Susan returned to Tucson to open her home studio. As a result of winning a public art bid for the Tucson International Airport a year later, Susan realized that she preferred making larger public art pieces than decorative bowls. She taught herself the art of tile-making and found a huge demand for her handmade mosaic tile art in both commercial and residential spaces. Santa Theresa Tile Works and its signature mosaic tile art was born!
When Susan is not designing her next tile project, she enjoys her cat, Alibaba, gardening and traveling. However, it’s her love of Tucson that has prompted her to participate in several community groups over the years. She is on the Board of Directors for the Downtown Tucson Partnership and works with WAMO (Warehouse Arts Management Organization), a non-profit with the goal of developing the Tucson Historic Warehouse Arts District as a center for incubation, production and exhibition of the arts, with artists at its core.
Kristine Stoner – Senior Tile Artist and Instructor, Production Manager
Kristine started working for Susan Gamble in her backyard studio in 1998. With very little ceramics experience she, with Susan’s help, slowly learned the art of tile-making. Her love of watercolor and oil painting, as well as nature, inspires much of Kristine’s tile artistry. This can be clearly seen in her fireplaces, mosaic tile murals and in the numerous handmade mosaic tiles found in the showroom.
Whether it is designing and fabricating commissioned mosaics or helping customers develop their own compositions in the showroom, each project poses different challenges. Kristine finds this creative process a wonderful and fulfilling experience.
When she is not creating gorgeous custom-made mosaic art tiles, Kristine keeps busy with looking after her garden, her cats and giving Santa Theresa Tile Works’ Facebook and Pinterest pages, a voice.
Donna Stoner – Senior Tile Artist and Instructor,
Donna joined her sister, Kristine Stoner at Santa Theresa Tile Works in 1999. With a few painting classes from Pima Community College and her natural affinity for layering and over-lapping vibrant colors, she was a perfect fit for Santa Theresa Tile Works. Over the years, Donna’s ability to capture the vitality of the wildlife that attracts so many who live and visit the Sonoran Desert has resulted in many of Santa Theresa Tile Works’ most beloved mosaic tiles.
The creative process of developing and designing commissioned handmade mosaic tile art, according to Donna, is definitely the best part of working at Santa Theresa Tile Works. The collaboration between customer and tile artist to develop a unique composition challenges the imagination and her design skills as an artist.
Outside of Santa Theresa Tile Works, Donna is an accomplished painter/sculptor with her works exhibited at the Grogan Gallery of Fine Art, Raices Taller 222 Art Gallery, and Dinnerware Artspace. She spends her free time painting, tending to her garden and her babies, Lupita (her dog) and Zelda, her cat.
